1. DO NOT EAT BEFORE YOU RUN
I found out the wrong way. I had my lunch, waited 20-30 minutes and decided I was bored of waiting. I jumped into my car and drove to the woods for a run. The first mile was a dream, I was running so well but the next three miles were hell. My tummy did not enjoy the pounding up and down. I had to stop frequently to either be sick or clench to make sure I didn’t $*** myself. So, make sure you leave a good hour and a half before running.
2. PACE YOURSELF
A common error I have made is running far too fast too early. I have stepped out the house, started running and felt great. So I decide to run faster and faster until BANG. I’m shattered, I am barely half way on my run and I am panting like a dog. I may have run an incredible first half but the second half I may as well have walked. SO, find your rhythm and trust yourself. Don’t think you are Mo Farah after a week of training.
3. USE DECENT RUNNING TRAINERS
Throw away those horrible trainers. The last thing you want to do is to go on a run with no foot or knee support. You will only cause yourself damage! You will enjoy your run considerably more with trainers that don’t cause you any pain!!
4. DON’T BITE OFF MORE THAN YOU CAN CHEW
If you are just starting out running, build up slowly. You will be much better off coming back from a run and thinking I could have done more. The last thing you want to do is to set yourself an unrealistic goal, end up walking most of it and being upset with yourself when you finally make it back home.
5. PLASTER YOUR NIPPLES
Sorry to be blunt but I made this mistake. I went out for an 8 mile run and my nipples were literally bleeding by the end. That wasn’t even the worst of it! The next week or so they scabbed and were irritated for a long long time! If you can’t find any plasters at least put some Vaseline on.
